Starting Out as a VJ
Some people may be completely new to VJing or just getting started. What would you suggest they do to get started?
Well.. learn the basics such as the technical things, find the hardware & software that suits you, sharpen your sense of art and practice.
When did you start VJing and what gets you most excited about it?
I started around 2006, my friend is a resident DJ and he’s the one who asked me to collaborate. Since I’m a video editor, I thought it would be awesome if I can do it “live”.
Your VJ Setup
What do you use in your VJing setup?
I keep it real simple, using just a Traktor Kontrol F1 and for VJ software I use Resolume.
There are lots of options out there for VJing, why did you choose your specific VJ software (Resolume)?
Easy to use & having lots of folders to load a ton of footage. I don’t really need a lot of effects because my style is kind of simple.
Any software/hardware that you’d personally recommend for VJs to start out?
Resolume of course because it’s simple but powerful.
Creating VJ Loops
Do you have a formal background in graphic design/motion graphics or are you self taught?
I was a graphic designer. I studied design & advertising. But for editing & motion graphics I learned from friends & YouTube haha.
What are your favourite tools/software for creating VJ loops?
I only use After Effects =).
Have you worked with artists/events to create visuals specific to their needs? Can you talk about the process for that?
Yes! Some of them gave me the concept. But most of them trust 100% in me. One thing for sure is to listen to their playlist especially when they re-arrange their song. I would listen to their songs very carefully and feel it deeply. After that we have a practice session in studio.
When you’re creating loops where do you start? Can you walk through your creating process when creating loops?
All based on my feeling at the time. No sketch. All in my head and let my hands, brain & heart move freely =).
How would you suggest other VJs start creating their own loops?
If you want to move to the next level, Just do it! Let it flow. Follow your heart. And start with simple objects/shape.
Business of VJing
What’s something that surprised you about VJing?
That VJing is not only for music/festivals. I’ve done concerts for many genres (pop, rock, hiphop, gospel) but also for theatre shows, orchestra and corporate events.
Who do you admire in the VJ world? What do you admire about them?
Hmmm.. too many hahaha. Well I always admire those who produce their own video loops and VJ manually without audio sync like what Zee & Afro Jack’s VJs did. And for Indonesian VJs I admire Isha Hening. You should Google her works.
What’s the biggest challenge when it comes to VJing?
Finding others that want to collaborate. And coming up with idea’s for more loops.
What are you most proud of when it comes to VJing? A specific gig, or something you made?
All gigs are special for me. But I’m really happy if people get the “message”. I also feel really honoured if someone says “I have your video loops!” haha.
